About
BBC Alba History, Coverage, Features
BBC Alba is a Gaelic-language television channel produced in Scotland. This channel is a joint venture between the BBC and MG Alba, and it was launched on September 19, 2008. The name “Alba” is the Scottish Gaelic name for Scotland. Most of the channel’s content is produced in Scotland, which is a unique thing in the United Kingdom.
BBC Alba broadcasts more Scottish sport than any other channel, devoting over three hours a week to association sports. In the past, BBC Alba’s sports coverage has involved four disciplines: football, rugby, shinty, and curling.
Over the years, BBC Alba has aired several Scottish Premier League games, often being those not aired by Sky or BT Vision. The game aired by BBC Albas was always delayed three hours, giving the channel’s production the chance to add subtitles to the match.
BBC Alba airs its content for just seven hours a day. The channel is only available on a Standard Definition feed, which is generated in the network’s headquarters at Pacific Quay, Glasgow.
