About
Las Estrellas History, Coverage, Features
Las Estrellas is a private free-to-air television channel from Mexico, owned and operated by Grupo Televisa. The channel was launched on March 21, 1951 as Canal 2. This was just the second channel to be launched in Mexico behind its sister network, Canal 4, but Canal 2 quickly became one of the most popular TV channels in Latin America up to these days. The channel would later be rebranded as El Canal de Las Estrellas, a name that would stick until 2016, when it was renamed as Las Estrellas.
Las Estrellas is known as a general entertainment channel. Over the years, the channel has cemented its reputation to bring entertainment to Mexican families thanks to their famous telenovelas, reality shows, children’s programming, comedy shows, and news broadcasts, which have taken most of the channel’s screen time during the week. As time has gone by, sports coverage, reality shows, movies, and children’s programming has overtaken the channel’s grid, giving all users something to watch at some point of the week.
Las Estrellas’ sports coverage has been one of the most thorough in television history. The channel has covered football games, boxing bouts, American football matches, baseball games, and more. Some of the top-notch events covered by this channel have included the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA Euro, the Summer Olympic Games, the FIFA Confederations Cup, the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the Copa América, and other major events. Las Estrellas has also aired several friendly and competitive games featuring the Mexican National Football Team.
Speaking about club football, Las Estrellas has covered Liga MX and Copa MX matches primarily, although other tournaments such as the Spanish Primera División and the UEFA Champions League have also been aired by this network. Additional coverage for all the competitions mentioned above has also been supplied by Las Estrellas over the years, with two of the most popular highlights shows in the country being aired by this network over time.
Las Estrellas started airing its content via a Standard Definition feed, although the channel was one of the first in the country to adopt a HD feed, which is available in almost every region of Mexico. Users who are not able to access HD technology can get a hold of a downscaled version of Las Estrellas’ HD feed where necessary.
