About
Channel 5 History, Coverage, Features
Channel 5 is a Singaporean television channel owned and operated by Mediacorp. The channel was launched on April 2, 1963 as a regional channel, when it reportedly offered content for 100 minutes to the 58 citizens that owned television in Singapore back then. After several changes, the channel turned into an English-language channel in 1994.
Over the years, Channel 5 has been labeled as a general entertainment channel, with news, children’s programming, drama programs, reality shows, sitcoms, variety shows, movies, music programs, sports broadcasts, and other topics being covered by the channel. Local shows have been aired on this channel, but most of its programming has come from foreign companies, especially movies and sitcoms.
When it comes to sports, Channel 5 has covered football, tennis, motorsports, golf, badminton, and multi-sport events such as the Summer Olympic Games, the Winter Olympic Games, and the Southeast Asian Games, to name a few.
Speaking about football, Channel 5 has included coverage of domestic leagues and international tournaments. Club football covered on this network has included games for the Singapore Premier League and the Singapore Cup, while international competitions such as La Liga, the French Ligue 1, the English Premier League, the Italian Serie A, and the Bundesliga have also been featured on Channel 5. Added to those leagues, national team football has been featured in tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Euro.
Channel 5 was launched as a Standard Definition channel, but a High-Definition feed saw the light and became the top choice to watch this channel in the early 2010s.
