France 2 History, Coverage, Features

France 2 is a French free-to-air television channel, owned and operated by France Televisions. The channel was launched in 1964 as RTF Television 2, but it was later rebranded to Antenne 2 in 1975, and it would eventually be known as France 2 since 1992. The channel has been frequently referred to as one of the most watched public TV channels in France.

France 2 has usually been categorized as a general entertainment channel, due to the wide variety of topics included in the shows they have aired. Over the years, France 2 has offered news coverage, magazine shows, documentaries, game shows, talk shows, children’s programming, soap operas, dramas, sitcoms, and sports.

Speaking about sports, France 2 has covered some of the top football competitions in France, such as the defunct Coupe de la Ligue and the Coupe de France. Other top sports competitions covered by this network in the past have included the Olympic Games, the Tour de France, and the Roland Garros tennis tournament.

Over the years, France 2 has expanded its coverage beyond French borders. Neighboring countries such as Portugal, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and Luxembourg have enjoyed France 2’s broadcasts. Other territories where the channel has been available include Australia, the Middle East, and some American countries.

France 2 broadcasts its content in HD, although a downscaled version of this feed is used to bring the signal to those homes using Standard Definition TVs.
