NDR Fernsehen History, Coverage, Features
NDR Fernsehen is a German regional TV channel owned and operated by public TV and radio broadcaster Norddeutscher Rundfunk. It was launched on January 4, 1965 simply as NDR, and it serves the northern German states of Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Hamburg, and Bremen. It was rebranded as NDR Fernsehen in 2001.
All five regions have a specific channel that serves them, with local shows and general information broadcasts related to each of them. Other shows aired by these channels include soap operas, tv series, documentaries, and magazine shows related to each of the regions covered by the channels.
Over the years, all channels were only available on their specific region, but satellite and cable tv providers have made all channels available nationally. Furthermore, these channels have also been made available to audiences in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, and Austria.
NDR Fernsehen launched its HD feed on April 30, 2012. Even so, the standard definition feed that kicked things off for these channels is also available on select pay-tv carriers.
