About
NPO 1 History, Coverage, Features
NPO 1 is a Dutch public television channel owned and operated by the Nederlandse Publieke Omroep, or NPO. It was launched on October 2, 1951, as NTS, but it would later be rebranded to Nederland 1 in 1964. That name would stick until 2014 when it was named NPO 1. This channel has frequently been named as one of the most-watched networks in the Dutch territory.
Over the years, NPO 1 has been labeled as the flagship channel for its parent company. Almost every major event has been aired on this channel over the years, including game shows, TV series, drama, and comedy shows. NPO 1 has also been used to air breaking news bulletins and major sporting events.
Speaking about sports, NPO 1 has regularly aired highlights for the top football league in the country, the Eredivisie. Furthermore, there have been other major sports events aired on this channel, such as the Tour de France, the 2008 Summer Olympics, and different editions of the FIFA World Cup. UEFA Champions League games were also available on this channel in the past.
NPO 1 started airing its content in Standard Definition, but a High-Definition feed was first tested in 2008 and officially launched in 2009. Users who do not have access to HD technology might be able to watch this channel via a downscaled version of the HD feed. On top of that, NPO 1 has also started to offer a 4K UHD feed in some regions.
