About

ORF 1 History, Coverage, Features

ORF 1 is a public televisión channel from Austria. It is one of four public channels in that country, but this one became the first public TV channel in Austria when it launched on August 1, 1955 under the name ORF Fernsehen. The channel changed its name twelve years later, when it was rebranded as FS1. The TV channel kept that name until 1992, when it changed to ORF Eins. The channel went through one more rebranding in 2019, when its name was adjusted to ORF 1. It is owned and operated by the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, or ORF due to its initials in German.

This channel is considered as an entertainment channel due to the kind of shows it has broadcast over the years. Throughout its history, ORF 1 has aired TV series, talk shows, children’s shows, entertainment programs, and more.

Speaking about sports, ORF 1 has frequently covered some of the top sporting events in the world. In the past, ORF 1 covered the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA European Championship, Formula 1, and other domestic association football competitions.

ORF 1 started out broadcasting its content in Standard Definition (SD), but that would change in 2008, when the channel’s HD feed was launched. The first major event to be covered in this format was the 2008 UEFA Euro.
