About
RTE One History, Coverage, Features
RTÉ One is an Irish television channel property of the state-owned Raidio Teilifís Éireann. The channel was originally launched on December 31, 1961 under the name Telefís Éireann but was later renamed as RTÉ in 1966. The channel went through a new rebranding process in 1978, when it became RTÉ 1 after the launch of RTÉ 2. RTÉ One shows less ads than other available channels in Ireland and Northern Ireland, which has helped their reputation as the most-watched television channel in Ireland throughout the years.
RTÉ One’s content can be categorized as a general information channel, with current affairs shows, lifestyle programs, talk shows, quiz shows, soap operas, and TV series. While RTÉ One favors homegrown content, it has alsco acquired some properties, such as American TV series.
Speaking about sports, the channel has devoted part of its budget in the past to air sports-related shows including highlights of some competitions around the world. Their sports shows served as the proper way to test their brand-new HD feed, which was launched on December 16, 2013.
RTÉ One is available to almost the entire Irish population via the state’s terrestrial feed in HD, although there is still an SD feed available for those who are not equipped with an HD television. Both feeds are available on select pay-tv carriers working in Ireland and in some regions of the United Kingdom.
