About

Sport1 Germany History, Coverage, Features

Sport1 is a German free-to-air tv channel. It was known as DSF since its launch on January 1, 1993 up until its rebranding on April 11, 2010. It replaced the defunct tv channel Tele 5 and is owned and operated by Constantin Medien AG.

As its name states, Sport 1 focuses on broadcasting sports events, but it has also added adult oriented programming such as teleshopping and sizzling erotica shows. Sport1 has specialized in broadcasting football tournaments, basketball competitions, handball tournaments, and other sports such as darts, tennis, ice hockey, and motor sports.

Speaking about football, Sport1 has broadcast domestic tournaments such as the 3.Liga, the DFB Pokal, the DFB Pokal Women, the 2. Bundesliga, the Frauen Bundesliga, and the Regionalliga. The channel has also aired games for other leagues such as Ligue 1, The English Football League, and the Brasileirao.

Sport1 has also covered international tournaments such as games for age limit tournaments organized by UEFA, such as the U-21 championship, the U-19 championship, and the U-17 championship for both men and women. Other tournaments aired by this channel in the past include the AFC Champions League, the AFC Cup, and the International Champions Cup, with a special focus on German teams.

Although Sport1 is a free-to-air channel, it is also available on pay-tv carriers across the country. Sport1 is available on both SD and HD format, being up to the user to choose which feed they want to watch with their pay-tv carrier of choice. This channel is also available on other countries, such as Austria and Switzerland.
