Azteca 7 History, Coverage, Features
Azteca 7 is a privately funded television channel from Mexico, owned and operated by Televisión Azteca. The channel was once part of the Mexican free-to-air network, but that changed in 1993, when owner Ricardo Salinas Pliego won an auction to make the channel private along with its sister network, Azteca Uno. Azteca 7 was officially launched under its new name In October 1993.
Over the years, Azteca 7 has changed the approach of its programming, which has included animation series, TV series, movies, sports, and news broadcasts. This channel is also known for airing the first episode of The Simpsons in Mexico and for signing a lengthy broadcasting deal to air the animation series for over two decades. As time went by, Azteca 7 added children’s programming to their grid, and even turning into the channel’s flagship network for sports coverage, leaving most in-house productions and movie broadcasts to their sister channel, Azteca Uno.
Speaking about sports, Azteca 7 has covered a wide variety of disciplines, including football, American football, basketball, wrestling, international boxing matches, and tennis. Their dedicated broadcasts for those sports have gathered massive rating numbers for the channel over the years.
Azteca 7’s football coverage has included domestic competitions such as the Liga MX and the Copa MX. Azteca 7 has also shared broadcasting rights for all games and tournaments in which the Mexican National Football Team has been involved, including the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the FIFA Confederations Cup, the FIFA World Cup, the Copa America, and the CONCACAF Nations League. Friendly games have also been included in their deal with the Mexican Football Federation. Azteca 7 has also covered the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, and domestic leagues from around the world such as the Bundesliga.
Azteca 7 started airing their content in Standard Definition, but the Mexican government’s decision that required all free-to-air channels to switch to a High Definition feed was executed in 2012. Hence, Azteca 7 airs its programs in HD since then.
