About
ESPN App History, Coverage, Features
ESPN App is the official digital media and streaming platform delivering contents from ESPN properties in USA. It provides TV Everywhere streaming with live and on-demand access to ESPN networks, including flagship channel ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPN Deportes, ESPNU, ESPNews, SEC Network, SEC Network Plus, and Longhorn Network.
It was released in April 2018 to provide an enriched experience to ESPN viewers and sports fans in the US. The video functionality of WatchESPN—a now-defunct sports internet TV service that ran for nearly nine years—was then merged into the ESPN App. The latter also began featuring content that was not available on existing streaming service ESPN3, eventually becoming the main streaming source for all of ESPN’s assets.
Sports covered on the ESPN App include professional and college sports—from baseball, to basketball, American football, golf, cricket, rugby, soccer and more. In addition to streaming live games, the ESPN App covers game scores, highlights, podcasts, and it comes with a direct feed to listen to ESPN Radio.
User authentication via participating TV providers is required to access video streams, as these vary depending on the logged in user’s TV provider and package, and in some cases, internet service provider. The ESPN App serves as a consolidating platform that also integrates with ESPN+. Subscribers of ESPN+ may enjoy even more content on the ESPN App, consisting of thousands of extra live events, exclusive shows and an extensive VOD library containing past events, documentaries and more.
The ESPN App for Android is compatible with Android TV, smartphones, tablets and Chromecast. On iOS, it can be used on the iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. Android device users may be charged through their Google Play accounts, whereas Apple device users may be billed via their iTunes accounts for their subscriptions. The ESPN App is also available on Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, Fire TV smart TVs and Fire Tablets of the 4th generation or newer.
Since the ESPN App launched, soccer coverage on the platform has touched on English Football—namely the English Championship, League 1, League 2 and EFL Cup. In the past, it has also covered the UEFA Nations League and United Soccer League. As it inherits sports broadcast rights from all ESPN networks in USA, the ESPN App’s history of live soccer events includes live matches from the Mexican Liga MX, Italian Serie A, Coppa Italia, American Major League Soccer and UEFA Euro Championship Qualifiers.
