About Campeonato Paraibano
Campeonato Paraibano History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
Campeonato Paraibano is the top-flight league for the state of Paraiba in Brazil. This competition was founded in 1919, with Palmeiras winning the inaugural title.
The format for this league has changed over the years. This is in order to avoid conflict with the nation’s primary league competition.
For example, in 2013, the Campeonato Paraibano was played in two stages: a round-robin phase followed by a play-off stage. In 2017, the participants were split into two groups for the first stage, with each team facing the five teams in the other group both home and away. In 2018, a quarter-final stage was introduced but by 2019, the competition scrapped this and went straight into the semi-finals after the first round.
The number of contestants in the Campeonato Paraibano is typically 10, with the participants being placed in one group or drawn into two different groups for the first stage. Depending on the format, two teams get relegated to the second division every year.
