About Serie C
Serie C History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Brazilian Serie C is the third most relevant category in Brazil’s football system. The league saw the light in 1981, but it was suspended for six years until 1988, with only one season being played in this category. The Serie C would be an unstable tournament until 2001, when the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) narrowed down the list of teams from 64 to 20, which made it easier for clubs to travel to other cities, reduced costs and increased the quality of most matches.
Being in the middle of the Brazilian football pyramid, Serie C operates under a promotion-relegation system. The competition sees all 20 teams playing against each other in a single round-robin phase, where eight teams make it to the final stage. Once there, the eight clubs are divided in two groups of four, where the two best teams are promoted to Serie B. The winner of each group also makes it to the final match of the tournament, which is sorted out via a two-legged affair.
Every year, the Brazilian Serie C promotes four teams to Serie B, but in exchange, there will be four relegated clubs from this category to Serie D. Those who make the least points in the single round-robin phase will be relegated to Serie D every season, while Serie C welcomes the same number of clubs from the lower category.
Some of the most illustrious guests of Serie C over the years include Fluminense, América Mineiro and RB Bragantino. Meanwhile, the most winning team in this category is Vila Nova, who have claimed three Serie C titles.
Coverage for this league in Brazil was fueled by the interest in watching new talent emerge from lower-tier leagues, which is why live TV and streaming for Serie C has been available on DAZN and Nosso Futebol. The games streamed via DAZN may also be available in other countries, including the United States and Canada.
