About Coupe de la Ligue
Coupe de la Ligue History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Coupe de la Ligue was a competition organized by the Ligue de Football Professionel. Only professional clubs were allowed in the competition. It was first held in 1994, and up to 46 teams were invited to play in this tournament year in and year out.
The format of the competition saw all teams paired up on one-legged ties for the entire tournament. Ligue 1 teams entered the competition in the Round of 32 if they were not involved in European tournaments. Extra time and penalties were used to determine the winner.
The team with the most titles in this competition was none other than PSG, who won nine titles in this competition. In 2020, the Ligue de Football Professionel decided to abolish this tournament indefinitely to avoid scheduling conflicts.
