About Copa Sudamericana
Copa Sudamericana History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Copa Sudamericana is an annual club competition for men’s South American clubs organized by CONMEBOL. Founded in 2002, it is South America’s second-tier club competition after the Copa Libertadores and was created as a merger of several defunct CONMEBOL tournaments, including the Copa Merconorte, Copa Mercosur, and the Copa CONMEBOL.
The team who wins the Copa Sudamericana gains the opportunity to feature in several competitions, including the Copa Libertadores and the Recopa Sudamericana. In recent times, the Copa Sudamericana has undergone several changes. Up until 2016, the competition featured a total of 47 teams, with Argentinian and Brazilian teams getting automatic entry to the second round while the reigning champions qualified for the round of 16. However, in 2017, the competition expanded from 47 teams to 54, while the duration of the tournament was also expanded to run from around February to December.
Several teams have won multiple Copa Sudamericana titles since the tournament’s inception in 2002. These include Boca Juniors, Independiente, Independiente del Valle, and Athletico Paranaense.
Fox Sports owned the broadcast rights for the Copa Sudamericana in both Central and South America until 2018. In 2019, DirecTV Sports gained some broadcast rights for games, but as it was not readily accessible in all South American countries, ESPN Latin America also gained TV broadcast rights in February 2019 for matches in Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. Two years later, in 2021 ESPN reached a mutual agreement with DirecTV to broadcast Copa Sudamericana games in several countries.
Meanwhile, in Brazil, Disney, in conjunction with ESPN and Paramount+ secured broadcast and live-streaming rights for Copa Sudamericana matches in 2022 running through 2026, while open TV rights were acquired by local broadcaster SBT.
In the USA, beIN Sports owns the broadcasting and live streaming rights for the Copa Sudamericana until the 2025-26 edition of the tournament. US users can also watch live streaming of the Copa Sudamericana through the Fanatiz platform as well as on fuboTV.
