The FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup is an international association football competition for female players under the age of 20. Created by FIFA in 2002, the biennial tournament was originally known as the FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship with the age limit capped at 19. A reform in 2006 led to the age limit being raised to 20.
The competition was renamed as a World Cup ahead of the 2008 competition to ensure that the name was consistent with the other global tournaments organized by FIFA for national teams. Since the 2010 edition, the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup has been held in the country with the right to host the Women's World Cup in order to serve as a preparatory tournament.
A total of 16 teams are eligible to qualify for the final. Aside from the hosts who are given automatic qualification, 15 teams secure qualification from the six continents (Asia, Africa, South America, North America, Oceania, and Europe). The slot allocation is approved by the FIFA Council ahead of the continental qualifiers.
In the group stage, each team plays three matches. Three points are awarded for a win and one for a draw. Winners and runners-up of the respective groups progress to the knockout phase - the quarter-final, semi-final and, eventually, the final. A third-place play-off match is played between the losers of the semi-finals.
