The Recopa Sudamericana, or Recopa Sudamericana Santander for sponsorship reasons, is an annual competition organized by CONMEBOL, football’s governing body in South America. The first edition of this tournament took place in 1989, and after a four-year hiatus between 1999 and 2002, it has taken place without any interruptions. It is considered as the third most relevant club competition in the region behind the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana.
To be able to play this tournament, clubs from South American must win either the Copa Libertadores or the Copa Sudamericana. Once there, both teams will play a two-legged tie to determine the winner. Unlike other CONMEBOL-sanctioned tournaments, there is no extra time in the Recopa Sudamericana, as teams will go straight to penalties if the aggregate is level after both matches. Surprisingly, the venue for the final clash is elected via a draw, and not awarded straight to the Copa Libertadores winner.
As you might expect, teams from Brazil and Argentina have dominated the competition, with over titles divided between the clubs from both countries. On the other specter of the competition, teams from Bolivia and Venezuela have never made it to the match, which makes them the only nations in the history of this tournament with that “honor”. Former invitee Mexico, thanks to Pachuca’s Copa Sudamericana win in 2006, were able to play the clash against a South American side. Despite not being able to play the competition since 2008, Boca Juniors remain the most-winning team in Recopa Sudamericana’s history, with four titles to their name.
Broadcasting rights for the Recopa Sudamericana have been awarded to beIN Sports, who have earned rights to air and stream the competition until 2026. The deal sees the company covering the tournament both in English and Spanish. Additional streaming coverage is also available via fuboTV and Fanatiz USA, who also have streaming rights for the tournament until the 2026 edition.
