About Maurice Revello Tournament

Maurice Revello Tournament History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Maurice Revello Tournament, formerly known simply as Toulon Tournament, is a youth football competition played in France. Originally, the competition included clubs from all over Europe, but an update in 1975 limited entries to national teams, with all participants being undee 21 years of age. It was originally known as Toulon Tournament, but when creator Maurice Revello passed away, the competition was rebranded to honor his legacy.

The Maurice Revello Tournament is not sanctioned by FIFA or any other football federation, with all participants being invited by the organizing committee. The competition started with only eight teams being invited, but the number of teams plating the competition increased to 12 in later editions.

National teams involved in the tournament will be divided in three groups of four teams, where the winners will make it to the semifinals along with the best runner-up. All teams involved get to play one more game despite being eliminated to issue the final ranking for the tournament.

Contrary to what happens in FIFA tournaments, the use of extra time is not included in the competition, with penalty shootouts being used to determine the winner in both the group stage and the KO stage. Previously, the games featured 40-minute halves, but the regular 45-minute halves were applied in 2019.

The tournament has featured some of the brightest stars in world football, including Thierry Henry, James Rodríguez, Javier Mascherano, Alan Shearer, and Rui Costa, among many others. The presence of these players has sparked interest to watch and stream the competition all over the globe, with companies such as beIN Sports (USA/Canada) and ESPN (Latin America) bidding to broadcast and stream the competition.
