About UEFA Euro Qualifying
UEFA Euro Qualifying History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The UEFA European Football Championship, also known as the UEFA European Championship or simply the Euros, is a quadrennial international men's football competition featuring the national teams of the member associations of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to determine the champion of Europe.
The UEFA European Championship first started in 1960, and up until 1968, was known as the European Nations’ Cup. It has been held every four years since 1960, with the exception of 2020 when it was canceled due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. However, despite being rescheduled for 2021, the tournament was still titled “UEFA Euro 2020” in keeping with a 1996 tradition of branding each competition by the designation “UEFA Euro” plus [year].
Generally, all teams, with the exception of the tournament’s hosts, have to go through a lengthy qualification process. The UEFA European Championship has steadily expanded since its inception in 1960, when only four teams featured. In 1980, the number increased to 8, before doubling once again in 1996. Starting in 2016, UEFA decided to add eight more teams to the pool for a total of 24.
In its present format, the 24 teams are divided into six groups of four sides. Each team plays each other once. The top two teams plus the four best third placed teams all progress to the round of 16, which is played as a single elimination match, followed by the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final.
Spain, Germany, Italy, and France are among the most successful teams in UEFA European Championship history with multiple titles.
Despite its popularity in Europe, broadcast coverage of the UEFA European Championship did not start in the USA until the 21st century, where pay-per-view was the only choice for the 2000 and 2004 editions via Setanta Sports. In 2008, ESPN secured TV broadcast and live-streaming rights to the 2008 edition after reaching an agreement with UEFA in 2006. Following this, ESPN also broadcast and live-streamed the 2012, 2016, and 2020 versions of the UEFA European Championship, with ABC gaining the rights to broadcast a select number of matches.
However, in 2021, Fox Sports successfully outbid ESPN for the rights to broadcast and live-stream the 2024 and 2028 iterations of the UEFA European Championship and thus will have the exclusive TV and live-streaming rights for the upcoming two editions of the competition.
