About UEFA Super Cup
UEFA Super Cup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The UEFA Super Cup is an annual one-match competition that features the winner of the UEFA Champions League against the winner of the UEFA Europa League. It was created in 1971 as the brainchild of Dutch journalist Anton Witkamp, but did not become an official UEFA competition until 1973, with UEFA recognizing the match between Ajax and AC Milan as the first ever contested Super Cup. Originally named the Super Competition and then the European Super Cup, it was rebranded as the UEFA Super Cup in 1995.
Initially, the series was staged as a two-legged format until 1997, when UEFA decided to move matches to a neutral venue. Between 1998 and 2012, the Stade Louis II in Monaco served as the site for the UEFA Super Cup, but in 2013, UEFA decided to change this such that a new venue would be chosen for each edition of the annual match.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan, and Liverpool are among the most successful sides in the UEFA Super Cup.
Over the years, several TV broadcasters have held rights to cover the UEFA Super Cup in the USA. In the mid 1990s, the matches were shown on ESPN2, who held the rights until 2002, when Fox Sports acquired them through 2018. Following this, Spanish-language network Univision and TUDN acquired the TV and live-streaming rights to the UEFA Super Cup and provided TV coverage from 2018 to 2023. In 2023, CBS Sports/Paramount+ secured an exclusive broadcast rights deal to live-stream the UEFA Super Cup in a multi-year deal that is expected to run through until the 2029/2030 season.
