About Coppa Italia

Coppa Italia History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Coppa Italia is the annual domestic cup competition of Italian football. It is the second most prestigious competition in Italy after Serie A, and has been organized by the Lega Serie A since the 2009/10 campaign. Prior to this change, the Coppa Italia was organized by the DDS and the Football League (Lega Calcio) before the Lega Serie A became the official governing body of Italian professional football.

The Coppa Italia is a knockout competition, with each round played as a single match. The exception to this is the semi-finals, which is played over two legs. Should both teams finish level in regulation time, the match will then proceed to extra time and penalties to decide the winner.

The Coppa Italia includes clubs from Serie A and Serie B. Its winner earns a UEFA Europa League spot. If the winner has already secured a UEFA Champions League spot from their Serie A classification, then the next highest Serie A team gets the Europa League place.

In addition, starting from 1988, the winners of the Coppa Italia gain the right to face the winners of Serie A in the Supercoppa Italiana at the start of the next season.

Juventus, with 14 Coppa Italia titles, are the most successful team in this competition.

There are various TV broadcast and live streaming options to follow the Coppa Italia from around the world. In Italy, RAI held media rights to the Coppa Italia from 1986 to 2020, making the public television broadcaster the longest-serving Coppa Italia broadcast rights holder in Italy. Elsewhere, ESPN and CBS have been among the networks to take charge of TV and live-streaming rights in the USA while DAZN and fuboTV have been at the forefront when it comes to live-streaming Coppa Italia matches in Canada in recent times.
