About Eliteserien
Eliteserien History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Eliteserien is the top-tier football division in Norwegian football. It was known for 25 years as Tippeligaen, but it took its current name from 2017 forward. This league is run by the Norwegian Football Federation.
Due to the harsh weather conditions in this country, the competition is usually held between March and November of each calendar year. As most European leagues, the Eliteserien works under a promotion-relegation system, with the two teams with the worst records being automatically relegated to the OBOS-Ligaen. A third relegation spot is decided in a playoff between the 14th place team of the Eliteserien and the runner up of the OBOS-Ligaen.
The championship of the Eliteserien is awarded to the team with the most points after the 30 regular-season games have been played. The winner of the competition earns a spot in the preliminary rounds of the UEFA Champions League, while the runners-up and the third-placed club get qualify for the early stages of the UEFA Europa League.
Did you know? Rosenborg is the most successful team in Eliteserien's history, having won 26 titles within 51 years. Added to that, the Troillongan earned 13 titles in a row between 1992 and 2004, setting a record in the Norwegian top-flight.
