About Allsvenskan
Allsvenskan History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Allsvenskan is the top-tier football category in Sweden. It’s one of the oldest leagues in Europe, since it was established in 1924. Sixteen teams battle for the championship on a yearly basis.
Like most European leagues, the Allsvenskan league operates on a promotion-relegation system. The two teams with the worst records in the league are relegated, while one more club battles for their spot in the league in a two-legged promotion tie against the third place from the Superettan, the lower-tier category in Sweden.
Due to the weather conditions in Sweden, the tournament begins in the late days of March and concludes in November. Relegation playoffs take place during the last days of November, once all Swedish leagues have ended.
All teams are required to play 30 regular season games to determine the champion. Since this competition falls under UEFA’s wing, the league table is also used to hand out spots to play the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League, although none of those spots give access to the group stage of these competitions.
Coverage of this competition in Sweden has been awarded to Eurosport and discovery+. Both companies have purchased broadcast and streaming rights until the end of the 2026 season, with the deal including cup competitions and relegation playoff matches.
