Preview

The Milan Derby is finally back. However, this edition could be one of the most crucial showdowns between Inter Milan and AC Milan in recent history as the Nerazzurri can officially secure the Scudetto in Monday's 2:45 p.m. ET clash at the San Siro.

Inter Milan sit 14 points ahead of their nearest rivals in the Italian top-flight table, which just so happens to be AC Milan, with only six matches remaining this season. As a result, a win on Monday would mathematically secure them a 20th Serie A title.

Never before has a Serie A title been won in a derby match, let alone a derby as iconic as the Derby di Milano. This will be the goal for Inzaghi's men as they aim to cap off what has been a remarkable campaign by equaling Napoli's achievement of becoming the fastest team to secure a Serie A title.

Those are not the only things at stake but that is what matters most to the league leaders. Lautaro Martinez and Co. will want to win the title at the San Siro and in front of their bitter rivals, and while they will need a win over their arch-enemies, form favors the away side.

While the Italian powerhouses were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League in the round of 16, Inter have been unstoppable domestically. The Nerazzurri have drawn twice in their last four matches but the league leaders suffered only four slip-ups in their 28 Serie A outings before that.

Inzaghi's men have dropped points in only six matches all season and out of those six slip-ups, only one ended in defeat — a 2-1 loss at home to Sassuolo back in September.

Additionally, the champions-elect have been dominant in the Milan Derby recently. When these two heavyweights met earlier this season, the Nerazzurri ran riot, winning 5-1 thanks to masterstrokes from Marcus Thuram and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. That is not all, as Inter Milan have won their last five encounters with the Rossoneri, including both home and away in the UEFA Champions League semifinals last season.

AC Milan, on the other hand, are second in the table and while they are destined for another trophyless season, the European giants must do everything in their power to stop their rivals from winning the title at their shared stadium.

Pioli's side can only truly delay Inter Milan's title celebrations. The Scudetto is all but theirs, meaning AC Milan (19 titles) will eventually be dethroned as the joint-second most successful club in Serie A history, with the Nerazzurri on the brink of winning a 20th title while Juventus have 36 to their name.

Additionally, the manager's future has become a topic of discussion recently. The 58-year-old, who led AC Milan to the title in 2021-22, ending their decade-long wait, is set to leave the San Siro at the end of the season and while he remained coy on this issue, his departure appears inevitable.

"We will discuss at the end of the season. I don't want to comment about it now," the Rossoneri boss said ahead of this crucial derby when asked about his future at the club.

The hosts will want to delay the Nerazzurri's title celebrations. However, with Pioli being the manager with the most number of defeats in Milan Derby history, the home side will have to overcome the odds.

Leao and Co. are on the brink of losing six consecutive Milan Derby fixtures, with such a feat last occurring in the 1940s. Additionally, AC Milan are reeling from their frustrating UEFA Europa League quarterfinal elimination at the hands of fellow Italian club Roma and are on a three-match winless streak.

The odds are stacked against Pioli's side, but with several unwanted records on the horizon, AC Milan must find a way to deny their bitter rivals a win and an unforgettable title celebration at the San Siro.

Team news

AC Milan: Samuel Chukwueze, who was benched for the recent defeat to Roma, will be hoping to start in this crucial fixture. The Nigerian could join Olivier Giroud and Rafael Leao in attack bu the manager might prefer Pulisic and Loftus-Cheek to the winger. Malick Thiaw is suspended while Simon Kjaer and Pierre Kalulu are injured.

Inter Milan: Benjamin Pavard and Lautaro Martinez are back from suspension, which is a huge boost for the Nerazzurri. Juan Cuadrado is Inzaghi's only concern as the Colombian ace is expected to miss this crucial showdown due to an injury.
