Team descriptions

Brazil

The talented Verdeamarelha will be seeking for redemption when the competition begins, having lost the title match in the 2021 edition. Dorival Junior's team has started to show glimpses of its old form, and with warmup games against Mexico and the United States, the South Americans seem ready to fight for the title. The nine-time champions in this competition have enough firepower to worry their rivals, but only time will tell if it is enough to take them all the way.

Copa América appearances: 37

Titles won: Nine

Worst performance: Group Stage (2016)

2021 Copa América ranking: 2nd

Players to watch: Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo, Endrick, Bruno Guimaraes.

Colombia

Los Cafeteros get to the Copa América with much to prove and with a good chance to make a name for themselves in this competition. The team coached by Nestor Lorenzo are ranked third in the CONMEBOL Qualifiers, with the added bonus of keeping an unbeaten run of over 20 games prior to the start of the Copa América. It has been over 20 years since Colombia's most recent title in this competition, and judging by the mix of experience and talent they will bring to the U.S., it would not be far-fetched to see them as title contenders.

Copa América appearances: 24

Titles won: One (2001)

Worst performance: Brazil 1949 (8th)

2021 Copa América ranking: Third place

Players to watch: Luis Díaz, Luis Sinisterra, James Rodríguez, Davinson Sánchez.

Paraguay

La Albirroja has not enjoyed its best form for quite some time, and while no one can rule them out from the race to reach the KO stages, they will face an uphill battle with their rivals in this lot. Coach Daniel Garnero is still figuring out which players are more reliable for his tactics, which may give some of their youngest players a chance to shine here. Nonetheless, there will be some veterans trying to bring back the good old days, and who knows? Maybe that will be enough to see them through.

Copa América appearances: 38

Titles won: Two

Worst performance: 12th place in 2016

2021 Copa América ranking: 6th

Players to watch: Omar Alderete, Richard Sánchez, Miguel Almirón, Ángel Romero.

Costa Rica

Los Ticos have been in such a position before, where thge entire world sees them as underdogs. The Central American team's hopes may be slim, but a young and talented team could be the recipe for a big performance this summer. With Keylor Navas retiring from the national team, all captaincy duties will fall on Francisco Calvo and Joel Campbell, the most experienced players in this squad and who will now be held accountable for the good -or bad- performances La Sele displays over U.S. soil.

Copa América appearances: 5

Titles won: None

Worst performance: Copa América 2016 (10th place)

2021 Copa América ranking: Did not play

Players to watch: Joel Campbell, Francisco Calvo, Jefferson Brenes, Michael Aguilera.

Must-watch games

Colombia vs Paraguay and Brazil vs Costa Rica will kick things off in this group, and for many reasons, both matches could be quite interesting to follow. Given that Group D will put an end to the group stage, the best possible way to do so will be by watching Brazil vs Colombia, a clash that could determine the winner of this group and an easier path for the KO stage.

Group prediction

Considering how all teams get to the cup, it seems hard to see Brazil without the top spot in the group, although Colombia will be quite the contender to make that happen. As things stand, Paraguay and Costa Rica seem to have a date with elimination, although the Paraguayans may edge Los Ticos if they can beat them when they lock horns.

1. Brazil

2. Colombia

3. Paraguay

4. Costa Rica
