Preview

The Euro 2024 semifinals are here, with Spain, the most entertaining team to watch all tournament, kicking things off with a highly-anticipated showdown with France. This clash of titans will take place on Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET as two powerhouses look to book their ticket to the final.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup winners are seen as the favorites after impressing all tournament. La Furia Roja are the only side with a perfect record, winning all three group stage matches, and have made it into the semifinals on the back of back-to-back exciting knockout stage victories.

After brushing aside Croatia, Italy, and Albania with ease in Group B, Luis de la Fuente's side booked a showdown with Georgia in the last 16. Fortunately, Player of the Tournament contenders Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal delivered a masterclass, guiding their nation to a 4-1 triumph.

If that was not enough, Spain once again announced themselves as the team to beat following their thrilling quarterfinal battle with Germany. Yamal and Co. dumped the Euro 2024 hosts out of the competition, beating them 2-1 in extra time in a match that will be fondly remembered.

The Group B winners had to wait until the 51st minute to break the deadlock, with Dani Olmo beating Manuel Neuer after being teed up by Lamine. Unfortunately, Germany equalized in the 89th minute through Florian Wirtz, and thus the tie went into extra time.

Spain did get the last laugh, sticking a dagger of their own after Mikel Merino scored the winning goal with only a few minutes left on the clock. With that, La Furia Roja are only 90 minutes away from a spot in the final at the Olympiastadion on June 14.

However, De la Fuente's men must first overcome the French. Spain stumbled at this very same stage at Euro 2020, losing to eventual champions Italy on penalties in the semifinals. Furthermore, the European Championship's joint-most successful side have not reached the final of this competition since they last won it in 2012. Can the Iberian nation end this wait?

France, meanwhile, are on the opposite end of the spectrum compared to their semifinal opponents. While Spain have been sensational to watch going forward, Les Bleus have been impeccable in defense, with the only goal they have conceded coming through a penalty.

That came in the group stage during their 1-1 draw with Poland on Matchday 3, a result which saw them finish as runners-up in Group D behind surprise winners Austria. With William Saliba, Dayot Upamecano, and Jules Kounde all making up the backline, it is not hard to see why Deschamps' defense has been impenetrable.

The Arsenal center-back, in particular, has won plaudits since entering the lineup for his first major international tournament. Meanwhile, Theo Hernandez has been one of the most industrious left-backs in the tournament, getting up and down the pitch to tremendous effect, while N'Golo Kante has turned back the clock and has been one of the best midfielders at Euro 2024.

Unfortunately, the French have been horrendous in attack. Despite boasting Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Marcus Thuram, Randal Kolo Muani, Antoine Griezmann, and PSG youngster Bradley Barcola, the two-time FIFA World Cup winners are yet to score a single goal in open play.

In all fairness to Kylian, the national team captain has had to play with a broken nose and a face mask since Matchday 1 following his nasty collision with Austria's Kevin Danso. His penalty against Poland on Matchday 3 remains the only goal scored by a French player, with Les Bleus profiting off of two own goals.

The first came in their opening game against Austria, which they won 1-0, while the other decided their round of 16 encounter with Belgium. Against Portugal in the quarterfinals, the team failed to score even once across 120 minutes, instead beating the Euro 2016 champions through penalties.

The French converted all five spot kicks while Joao Felix missed his attempt to send Portugal packing. Could we be in for another goalless draw when these two European powerhouses face in the Euro 2024 semifinals?

The question on everyone's mind is whether France's defense can contain Spain's scintillating attack long enough for Mbappe and Co. to end their barren spell in front of goal. Tuesday's exciting battle will answer this question.

Team news

Spain: Dani Carvajal is suspended for this match after getting sent off in the final few minutes of extra time in the quarterfinal win over Germany. Robin Le Normand is also suspended while Pedri has been ruled out for the rest of the tournament after suffering a medial collateral ligament knee sprain. Dani Olmo will be hoping to start after impressing in the last two matches.

France: Deschamps has no concern, with Adrien Rabiot returning from suspension after sitting out the win over Portugal. However, it will be interesting to see who the manager starts in attack. Saliba, Upamecano, Kounde, Hernandez, and Kante are all expected to start but Camavinga, Thuram, Kolo Muani, and Dembele will all be fighting for a spot in the lineup.

Who will the winner face in the Euro 2024 final?

The winner of Spain vs. France will face either the Netherlands or England in the final on June 14.

Key stats

  • Spain are the only team to win all five games in the tournament. This means they could become the first nation to win six European Championship fixtures in a row.

  • La Furia Roja also have the joint-best attack, with no other team scoring more goals than De La Fuente's side (11).

  • Additionally, the three-time European Championship winners also boast the joint-second-best defense in the competition, conceding only two goals.

  • However, France boast the best defense. They are yet to concede from open play, with the one goal they have conceded coming through a penalty.

  • This will be the sixth encounter between these two teams at an international tournament.

  • Les Bleus have beaten Spain in three of their previous five encounters at international tournaments, including the Euro 1984 final to win their first European Championship title.

  • La Furia Roja, meanwhile, have one victory to their name. However, that came in their most recent run-in, beating France in the Euro 2012 quarterfinals en route to lifting the trophy.
