Preview

Real Madrid and Barcelona prepare to face off in a highly-anticipated showdown in the U.S. in preparation for the upcoming 2024-25 La Liga campaign. This Metlife Stadium showdown will see newly-appointed Blaugrana manager Hansi Flick make his El Clasico debut as the German tactician looks to get the better of Carlo Ancelotti in the preseason.

Los Blancos are the champions of Spain and Europe, having won the UEFA Champions League and La Liga crowns in the previous season. However, Ancelotti's men enter this derby after a disappointing result against AC Milan in their preseason tour of the USA.

The Spanish giants kicked off their preparations with a 1-0 defeat to the Rossoneri, with Samuel Chukwueze scoring the only goal. The Merengues were without several players, with Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo yet to return while Kylian Mbappe was unable to make his debut.

In the absence of Ancelotti's world-renowned attackers, highly-rated teenager Endrick started and led the line but struggled. Additionally, questions will be asked of the club due to the retirement of Toni Kroos and the departure of captain Nacho to the Saudi Pro League.

Real Madrid revealed that they will not turn to the market to replace those two icons, thus giving rise to a few concerns. The European champions can alleviate those fears in their next two fixtures, however, and they are the weekend Clasico and the midweek clash with Chelsea.

Real Madrid face Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup shortly after that Chelsea clash but the focus remains on Saturday's showdown with Barcelona. Pride is on the line, having lost 3-0 to their bitter rivals last year in Dallas, but it was Vinicius and Co. that emerged victorious in competitive matches last season, winning three El Clasicos in a row in 2023-24.

Those three defeats for Barcelona came in the league (twice) and the Supercopa de Espana final. However, they were under Xavi Hernandez, who was sacked in May despite being convinced by the president to remain in charge after announcing his resignation four months earlier.

Hansi Flick was later appointed as his successor and will be making his El Clasico debut this Sunday. The former Bayern Munich boss has never faced Los Blancos before as a manager, making this fixture a first, but he has already made his Barcelona debut.

The Catalan powerhouse faced Manchester City in Orlando earlier this week and drew 2-2 with the Premier League champions. Pau Victor and Pablo Torre got on the scoresheet but a Jack Grealish goal at the hour mark denied Flick a win on his debut.

That fixture eventually went to penalties following the full-time whistle, which Barcelona won 4-1. Regardless, Culés will want to see their team beat their rivals at MetLife Stadium in preparation for the 2024-25 Spanish top-flight season.

Unlike Real Madrid, Lewandowski and Co. have three games left before starting their La Liga campaign, facing Los Blancos and AC Milan in the U.S. before locking horns with Monaco in the Joan Gamper Trophy.

And after losing three in a row, the pressure will be on the Blaugrana to inflict revenge.  Neither side are at their best due to Euro 2024 and the Copa America but fans can still expect a feisty encounter in New Jersey.

Team news

Barcelona: Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, and Ronald Araujo are all unavailable due to injuries.  Fermin Lopez, Eric Garcia, and Pau Cubarsi are representing Spain at the 2024 Olympics and are thus unavailable while Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres are on holiday after guiding Spain to the Euro 2024 title.

Real Madrid: Endrick, who made his debut in the 1-0 loss to AC Milan, should lead the line again and will be joined by Luka Modric, Antonio Rudiger, and Arda Guler. Kylian Mbappe is on an extended break and will not feature. Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Eduardo Camavinga are not yet back from holiday while Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo, and Eder Militao have just joined up with the squad.
