Tne semi-finals of the inaugural NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup are now upon us, and that means that things are surely set to get a lot more interesting as the four teams involved battle for a coveted spot in the finals taking place later this year.

Overview
It was another successful day for NWSL sides on matchday three, and not so great for Liga MX Femenil teams. Of the six representatives from the Mexican league, none have been able to progress to the knockout rounds as all five groups were won by NWSL teams. Unfortunately, newly created Utah Royals did not make the cut to the final four as they finished in fifth spot in terms of group winners, behind Kansas City Current, NJ/NY Gotham, Angel City, and North Carolina Courage.
The first semi-final will see NJ/NY Gotham take on Angel City. Interestingly, Angel City have been really struggling in regular league play (they currently sit in 11th place versus their upcoming opponents' fourth spot) but have really surprised many with their performances in this summer competition. They picked up eight points during the group stage thanks to wins over Club America and Bay FC, and successfully edged out San Diego Wave during a tense penalty shoot-out. Meanwhile, Gotham took a while to get going, but also topped their group after earning two wins in regular time over Washington Spirit and Guadalajara and a penalty shoot-out success against Chicago Red Stars on matchday one.
Then, it's on to the second semi-final, which will be another all-NWSL affair. Kansas City Current, who have been also having a great season in the NWSL as they sit top of the table, will lock horns with North Carolina Courage, who have had mixed results in the NWSL but have done well so far in this competition. The Current were the only team to win all three of their group stage games in regular time, while the Courage had to battle through two tricky penalty shoot-outs against Orlando Pride and Racing Louisville before finally getting their first regular time win over Mexican outfit Monterrey on matchday three.
