Preview
While the 2024 Olympics does not end until August 11, the men's soccer tournament wraps up this Friday, with France locking horns with continental rivals Spain in the highly-anticipated gold medal match. The hosts aim to make the home crowd proud but should be in for a tough ride in this Parc des Princes showdown.
While neither of the two finalists enjoyed a cozy ride to the gold medal match, France were made to sweat, with the hosts needing extra time against Egypt in what was a thrilling semifinal encounter.
Thierry Henry's side conceded first in that semifinal, going a goal down by the hour mark before Jean-Philippe Mateta's equalizer in the final 10 minutes of normal time forced the game into extra time.
The Crystal Palace striker and his former teammate Michael Oilise stole the show in this fixture, with the earlier completing his brace in the 99th minute before Oilse scored in the 108th minute to secure a 3-1 victory.
The newly-signed Bayern Munich winger has been one of the tournament's star players, scoring twice and assisting four goals so far. Additionally, the team as a whole have been emphatic, winning every single group stage fixture without conceding a single goal.
In fact, Les Bleus have conceded only once all tournament and that came in the semifinal, with the French beating Argentina 1-0 in a heated quarterfinal encounter. With that, Thierry Henry's side secured their first Olympic medal in 40 years.
France's last medal came at the 1984 Olympics, with the European powerhouses winning gold. The hosts are guaranteed at least silver but the aim will be to seal a first-placed finish on home soil.
Standing in their way are the Spanish, with the nation looking to follow up on their Euro 2024 success by winning gold at the 2024 Olympics. While the team that conquered the European Championship was completely different to this squad, Santiago Denia's side have continued the country's rampant form.
However, unlike France, La Roja have lost a game in this tournament. That sole defeat came against Egypt in their final group-stage fixture, losing 2-1 to finish second behind the North African nation in Group C.
Nonetheless, Fermin Lopez and Co. beat the Dominican Republic and Uzbekistan in the group stage before thrashing Japan 3-0 in the quarterfinals to set up a juicy encounter with Morocco in the semis.
This was a grueling test for Spain as they went a goal down in the 37th minute after conceding a penalty. Barcelona's Lopez equalized in the 66th minute before Juanlu Sánchez won them the game with only five minutes of normal time left on the clock.
La Roja are now 90 minutes away from their first gold medal in three decades and only their second in history. Since their 1992 success, Spain have finished as runners-up twice and will not want to suffer a similar fate on Friday.
Team news
France: Jean-Philippe Mateta will lead the line and will be joined in the attack by Michael Olise and captain Alexandre Lacazette. Loic Bade and Castello Lukeba should remain at the heart of Thierry Henry's defense while Ligue 1 talents Desire Doue and Ryan Cherki will be pushing for more minutes.
Spain: Fermin Lopez has been La Roja's star man and will start in Friday's final. Abel Ruiz, who scored in the quarterfinal win over Japan, should start in attack with Alex Baena and Pablo Barrios in midfield. Barcelona duo Pau Cubarsi and Eric Garcia have been the preferred center-back partnership and will retain this in the decisive fixture.
