Preview
European powerhouses Real Madrid return to competitive action 73 days after winning last season's UEFA Champions League final, with Los Blancos kicking off their 2024-25 campaign with the highly-anticipated UEFA Super Cup. Ancelotti's men face Atalanta in this showdown as the UEFA Europa League holders look to pull off the unexpected on Wednesday at the Kazimierz Górski National Stadium in Warsaw.
This will be Real Madrid's first competitive fixture since beating Dortmund 2-0 in last season's UEFA Champions League final, a result which earned them a record-extending 15th European Cup and a showdown with Atalanta.
Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Junior both got on the scoresheet, thus crowning another successful campaign for the biggest club in the world. With that, they completed the double, having beaten bitter rivals Barcelona to the Liga title.
However, the club face uncertainty. While Kylian Mbappe, who appears set to make his debut in the UEFA Super Cup, finally arrived at Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid waved farewell to two veterans in the form of Toni Kroos and Nacho.
The German maestro retired following Euro 2024 while the Spanish defender, who was the club captain, left Madrid for the Saudi Pro League. Neither will be replaced through the transfer window, meaning Ancelotti will have to find in-house solutions to potential problems that could arise from their departure.
The champions of Europe were in preseason action over the past two weeks, playing three matches in the USA. Unfortunately, all but one ended in defeats, losing 1-0 to AC Milan and 2-1 to Barcelona in New Jersey's El Clasico. Vinicius Junior and Co. did beat Chelsea in their most recent outing, winning 2-1, but Wednesday's clash will be a completely different test.
Unlike Real Madrid, Atalanta did not end their 2023-24 campaign with a win; instead, they lost 3-2 to Fiorentina in their final match. However, this was simply due to the scheduling as La Dea's Italian top-flight campaign ended after the UEFA Europa League.
While Gian Piero Gasperini's men finished fourth in Serie A, it ultimately did not matter as his team would have qualified regardless after winning the UEFA Europa League. Not only was this the Italian club's first European title, but it was also their first appearance in a European final, and Atalanta won it in emphatic fashion.
Lookman and Co. overcame Sporting CP and Marseille in the knockout stage and eliminated the almighty Liverpool in the quarterfinals, securing an unforgettable 3-0 win at Anfield. The Serie A outfit then faced Bayer Leverkusen in the final, with Xabi Alonso's Invincibles becoming the first team in German history to win the Bundesliga without losing a single game.
As a result, Atalanta were the underdogs but this mattered little as Lookman scored a first-half brace before completing his hat trick in the 75th minute to earn his team a 3-0 victory.
Just like with Real Madrid, Gasperini's side have played three preseason fixtures in the build-up to Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup. However, the UEFA Europa League holders failed to win a single fixture.
Regardless of their preseason form, beating Los Blancos on the European stage is one of the most difficult milestones to pull off. However, nearly three months after winning their first European title, Atalanta will want to add another to their trophy cabinet.
Team news
Real Madrid: David Alaba is unavailable for this fixture as he continues his recovery from an ACL injury. Eduardo Camavinga is also a serious doubt after appearing to hurt his knee during training. However, Jude Bellingham and Dani Carvajal are back and available following their participation in the Euro 2024 final. And more importantly, marquee summer signing Kylian Mbappe appears set to make his debut and could partner Bellingham and Vinicius Jr. for the first time.
Atalanta: Giorgio Scalvini and Gianluca Scamacca are out with long-term injuries. Zaniolo, Rafael Toloi, and El Bilal Toure are also unavailable while Teun Koopmeiners will not be selected after handing in a transfer request to force a move. Charles De Ketelaere, who was permanently signed from AC Milan, should be available and will likely join Ademola Lookman in attack. Meanwhile, summer signings Mateo Retegui, Ben Godfrey, Nicolo Zaniolo, and Ibrahim Sulemana will all be hoping to participate.
