Real Madrid ace admits to being unhappy after being snubbed for the 30-man shortlist for this year's Ballon d'Or prize.
The 23-year-old watched seven other teammates — both current and past — get nominated, with Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe, Toni Kroos, Antonio Rudiger, and Dani Carvajal all getting the nod.
However, despite scoring 19 goals, assisting an additional nine, and helping Los Blancos win both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, the Brazilian did not get nominated for France Football's prestigious award.
In an interview with ESPN, the former Santos talented opened up about his frustration over being snubbed, arguing that he should have gotten in ahead of some of the other nominees.
"I was upset, I think I deserved it," Rodrygo told ESPN.
"I don't want to belittle the players who are there, but I think I had a place in the 30. It was a surprise... But there's not much I can do, I'm not the one who decides these things."
Rodrygo also shared his thoughts on why he was nominated. According to the South American, Ancelotti's desire to utilize him as a versatile option has detracted from his status in the beautiful game.
"Often, I'm just filling spaces," Rodrygo added. "Is someone missing there? Put Rodrygo in. Is someone missing on the right? Rodrygo. Is someone missing as No. 9? Rodrygo. That's it. It may get in my way a little, but I'm a team player."
This comment might raise a few eyebrows as many wondered whether he would leave following Kylian Mbappe's arrival. Instead, he has started every single game for Los Merengues this season.
Nonetheless, many still speculate whether he will leave next summer to step out of the shadows of his current teammates Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, and Bellingham.
Real Madrid are the most represented club in this year's Ballon d'Or shortlist with seven nominations, followed by Arsenal and Manchester City with four each.
The winner of this award will be announced on October 28, with Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, and Rodri being the favorites to lift this gong.
